Starting with Safari 12.1 and iOS 12.2, WebKit and Apple will implement Intelligent Tracking Prevention 2.1 (ITP 2.1). This update restricts the longevity of client-side cookies that are set on end-user devices. From these versions forward, client-side cookies will be automatically expired and deleted after seven days. For more information about ITP 2.1, see WebKit - Intelligent Tracking Prevention 2.1.

ITP 2.1 FAQ

1.

Do I need to make any changes to my banner?

No. Your OneTrust banner script and preference center are already compatible with the ITP 2.1 standard. The content and behaviors you've already configured will continue to work as expected in all modern browsers.

2.

How does this change the experience for visitors to my site?

Site visitors who use iOS or Safari to access your site will begin to see your banner and be prompted to make preference selections every seven days.

Site visitors using other browsers or operating systems such as Chrome, Firefox, or Internet Explorer will not experience any difference due to this change.

3.

How will this impact my records of consent?

If your organization leverages records of consent logging for your banners and preference centers, you should expect to see an increase in the number of transactions processed through your banner.

Site visitors will be prompted after each 7 day period to make new preference selections, which will set a new instance of the OneTrust cookie with a new identifier value. A new data subject record will be created for each instance of the cookie and any selections made while that instance is active will be associated with the data subject record. For more information about records of consent and banner consent logging, see Enabling Consent Logging and the Cookie Consent Dashboard.

iOS 17

1.

Why is the Banner reappearing when I use Safari on my iOS 17 device?

Please ensure the Block All Cookies setting is disabled in the Advanced section of your device's Safari settings. This setting can delete the necessary OneTrust cookies and force the banner to reappear.

For more information, see Apple's support documentation here.

2.

Why doesn't the Banner appear when I browse Safari in Incognito windows?

Please ensure the Advanced Tracking and Fingerprinting Protection setting is disabled for Private Browsing in the Advanced section of your device's Safari settings. When enabled, the OneTrust banner may not appear and you may be prompted to reduce your advanced privacy settings.

For more information, see Apple's support documentation here.
